Commercial Solar Financing
The most common reason a commercial solar project stalls is not the roof, the engineering, or the utility — it is the capital request. dGEN Energy Partners built its model around removing that barrier: commercial solar financing structured so projects can move forward with little to no capital investment. This page explains the options in plain terms, so you can walk into the conversation knowing which structure fits your facility.
Option 1: Solar PPA for businesses
Under a power purchase agreement (PPA), a third party owns the solar system installed at your facility, and your business purchases the power it generates. The practical effect: solar on your roof without buying the system outright — the structure behind most “no-money-down commercial solar” offers.
A PPA is usually the right conversation for businesses that want predictable energy costs and zero capital outlay, and are comfortable with a partner owning the asset on their roof.
Option 2: Lease
A lease structure also keeps the purchase price off your balance sheet: your business pays for the use of the system rather than owning it. Leasing suits facilities that want solar’s operating benefits with a simpler commitment than ownership, and it pairs naturally with dGEN’s turnkey commercial solar installation and EPC scope — one team designs, builds, and maintains the system either way.
Option 3: Loan / purchase
Some owners prefer to own the asset from day one. A loan-financed purchase puts the system on your books as your property, with dGEN as your commercial solar EPC company for design, engineering, permitting, construction, and O&M. Ownership is the right frame for businesses focused on long-term asset value and direct control of the system.
Path to Ownership
You may see dGEN describe its ownership route as the Path to Ownership. It is our branded name for the structured route by which a business ends up owning its system — the destination matters more than the label, and the financing conversation will map which of the structures above gets your facility there.
Incentives change the math — in your favor
Financing is only half the equation. Incentives can materially reduce a project’s effective cost: on dGEN’s Clear Lake Community School District program in Iowa — a 107,000 sq ft roof-plus-solar project — $747,372 in incentives were secured as part of a program delivered at $1,398,936 against a $2 million budget, earning 2026 RCMA Project of the Year recognition. What applies to your facility depends on your state, your utility, and the structure chosen — which is exactly what a free analysis works out. dGEN is a licensed contractor in multiple states, including statewide Florida licenses (CGC1542104 · CCC1338053); see our licenses page.
Financing works for more than solar
The same little-to-no-capital-investment approach can structure the full project scope: the commercial roofing work a solar array needs, battery storage and microgrids for continuity, and onsite generation where utility timelines are the problem — see Need Power Faster? for how LGEN projects start. Our project portfolio shows the finished results, and our FAQ page answers the financing questions owners raise most often, including “Can I get solar without paying up front?”
Frequently asked questions
Can we really get solar without paying up front?
That is the point of the PPA and lease structures described above — little to no capital investment is dGEN’s core model. The right structure for your facility depends on ownership goals and site specifics.
What is the difference between a PPA and a lease?
Under a PPA you buy the power the system produces; under a lease you pay for the use of the system itself. Both avoid the outright purchase price. A free analysis will show which fits your facility.
Do incentives reduce what we pay?
Yes — incentives reduced the Clear Lake program’s cost substantially ($747,372). Available incentives vary by state and project; we identify them as part of the analysis.
We also need roof work. Can that be financed in the same project?
Yes. Because dGEN is both a commercial solar EPC and a Top 3%-ranked commercial roofing contractor, roof and solar scopes can be engineered — and financed — as one project.
